The answer isn't as cut-and-dry as you might think. It depends on a few factors, such as the type of cover you have and the weather conditions you're driving in. In general, you want your body to be tight enough that it's not flapping in the wind but loose enough that it can still expand and contract with temperature changes. 

If you're unsure whether your cover is too tight or loose, the best thing to do is check it when the weather is nice and mild. If it's more intimate than usual, it might be distributing load weight more evenly helps prevent premature wear. Time for an adjustment. On the other hand, if it's looser than average, you might want to give it a little more tension. 

First, give the cover a good visual once-over. Make sure there are no gaps or looseness anywhere along the sides or front of the cover. If there are, that's an indication that the cover isn't tight enough. 

Next, try to open the cover. It should be snug and not open easily. If it spreads quickly, it's not tight enough and needs to be adjusted.
